CONCEPTUAL
MEMORIAL OF ISAMU NOGUCHI
07 / 12 / 2018
Stones, plain and simple were Noguchi’s great love. The artist believed that any kind of art should “disappear” and become one with its surroundings, that there is no border between nature and architecture. In his water-rock sculpture, Noguchi tried to depict the harmony between rock and water. He recognized water as a natural maker of sculpture. The water stone is a sculpture made from basalt and it has a cut circle in the middle that representing the life cycle, and a symbol of enlightenment, perfection, and unity. “At any given moment stone is the sculptor and water is the material, but over the course of time water is the sculptor and stone is the material.”
